Nail bracing

Nail braces are very similar to the dental braces. Also made of dental wire, nail brace consists of a hook to be placed under either side of the nail, with some type of tensioning system pulling the hooks together and gently lifting the sides of the nail and eventually retraining the nail to grow to a flatter shape over time.

Manufacturing of a nail brace

First, with use of silicone, an imprint of the ingrown nail is made. This imprint serves as a mould for the plaster cast. With the aid of this cast a brace from a dental wire is curved. Finally, the brace is applied on the nail.

The application of a nail brace takes approximately 30 minutes. Then, each 5–8 weeks, an adjustment and activation have to be done on it. Only this procedure allows the nail to grow to a flatter shape over time. The total time needed for the nail to be reshaped is about 12–14 months.
